The grand temple of Maa Bamleshwari is located in Dongargarh in Rajnandgaon district of Chhattisgarh State. This place is surrounded by mountains, it is first known as Dongri and now Dongargarh. About two and a half thousand years ago, it was known as Kamakhya City. Here was the rule of King Veersen. They were childless. For the welfare of children, they worshiped Goddess Durga and Shiva. As a result, he got a son within a year. Veersen named the son Madansen. To express gratitude to Mother Bhagwati and Lord Shiva, king built a temple of Mother Bumleshwari.

After Madansen, his son Kamasena assumed the throne. Kamasena was contemporary of Ujjain's King Vikramaditya. Kamakhya city was famous for art, dance and music and Kamakandla was a famous dancer of the city. She was versatile and beautiful in dance forms. Discussions of his beauty and dance skills were far and wide.

Once, Kamakandala was danicing in the Raj Darbar. At the same time, a musician named Madhavanal passed near the Rajdarbar and lost in music. Due to being a music lover, Madhavanal wanted to enter the court, but the court did not allow him to go inside. Madhavanal was sat outside and enjoying the music of Tabla and Ghungroo.

Madhavanal caught up with mistake

Madhavanal felt that the left thumb of the tabla player is fake and there is no pebble in the in the dancer's ghoonghroo. This was make mistakes in the rhythm. He said, "I came here in vain. There is no such musician in the Raj Darbar, which can identify the correctness of the rhythm and catch the impurities."

When the gatekeeper heard such things about his King and Raj Darbar from a stranger, he immediately stopped him. He immediately went to the court and narrated the matter to the king. Only after the king's command, the gatekeeper took him to the Raj Darbar. On confirmation of his statement, he was given a chance to be consistent. Kamakandla started dancing in their accompaniment. It seemed as there was a great confluence of the Ragas-Ragnis. Then suddenly a bumble-bee sat on the breast of Kamakandala. For a short time, Kamakandala's attention has shared, but with the tact of dance, she blew up the bee. Nobody could see this verb, but Madhavanal was watching. This incident made Madhavanal a lover of Kamakandla. Both of them got to love which Rajkumar Madanaditya did not like at all.

Kamakandla was once dancing in the accompaniment of Madhavanal. After a very good presentation, Raja was pleased to award Madhavanal, but he gave the award given by Raja to the dancer. This made the king angry.

The king ordered them to go out of the state immediately, but Madhavanal did not go out of the state and hidden in the cave of the hills in Dongargarh village. Kamalandla used to secretly go to meet Madhavnala with her friend Madhavi. On the other hand, Madanaditya, son of King Kamesen, was of atheist and inexhaustible nature in contrast to his father's nature. He wanted to love Kamakandla and wanted to get her. Due to the fear of Madanaditya, Kamakandla started pretending to love him.

One day Madhavanal was in her house to meet Kamakandla on the night and Madanaditya also went to meet Kamakandla with his soldiers. Seeing this, Madhavalan got out of the way from behind door. When he asked about the noise inside the house, Kamakandla spoke to the wall alone. Madanaditya did not satisfy with her answer and asked his soldiers to keep an eye on the house and went towards the palace. One night, Kamakandla was went to the cave by hear the sound of Veena but she was returned home through the another way after seeing Madnaditya was sat on the way of cave  Madanaditya got Kamakandla under house arrest on suspicion. On this, Kamakandla and Madhavnala started dealing with letter through Madhavi, but Madanaditya grabbed her after carrying a letter. Madhavi spewed all the truth with the temptation of fear and money.

Raja Vikramaditya Helped Them

Madanaditya arrested Kamakandla on charges of sedition and sent her jail. Also soldiers went to arrest madhavanal but he ran away and reached in Ujjain. At that time, Ujjain was ruled by King Vikramaditya, who was a very proud and compassionate king. After listening Madhavanal's compassionate story, he attacked on Kamakhya town to helping Madhavanal. Vikramaditya was victorious after several days of intense war and Madanaditya was killed by Madhavanal. The great Kamakhya city was completely destroyed by the intense war. And only mountains remained all around and thus Dunga Rajya city background was prepared. After the war, Vikramaditya test the  love of Kamakandla and Madhavanal, he informed to kamakandla that Madhavnala was dead in the war, then Kamakandla jumped into the lake and dead. The lake is still famous as Kamakandla Lake. Meanwhile, Madhavanal also gave up his life with the self-effulgence of Kamakandla. Raja Vikramaditya worshiped the mother Bamleshwari Devi and immediately got ready to give his life. Then Goddess manifested and stopped his devotee from self-injure. After this Vikramaditya also asked for boon with the life of Madhavanal and Kamakandla that she would be honored in the mountain in her awakened form. Since then, it is famous in the form of Mata Bamleshwari Devi in the temple in Dongargarh.

1. In the historic and religious city, there is two world famous temples of Mata Bamleshwari in Dongargarh. A temple is situated on top of the hill which is 16 hundred feet high, popularly known as 'Badi Bamleshwari'. The temple situated on the level is known by the name of the 'Chhoti Bamleshwari'.

2. Both are called each other's sister. The mother above is considered to be big sister and down as younger sister.

3. In 1964, the former King of Khairagarh, Shri Raja Virendra Bahadur Singh, had set up a trust and handed over the operation to the Trust.

13. On the way to Dongargarh from Rajnandgaon on the Mumbai-Howrah route, there is the Maa Patal Bhairavi Ten Mahavidya Peeth Mandir in Rajnandgaon, which is view able due to its magnificence. The people say that in Maa Patnabhaarvi is the largest Shivalinga-shaped temple in the world. By Road: Dongargarh is located at a distance of 57 km from Rajnandgaon District Headquarters. The best way to go there is train, bus, and then own transport system.

By Train: If you want to travel by train then the nearest railway station is Dongargarh. And

From Fight: The nearest airport is Raipur. Which is well connected to domestic flights.
