Hamar Chhattisgarh : Bhoramdeo Temple, Khajuraho Of Chhattisgarh


Bhoramdeo Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to god Shiva. This is also know us "Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh" which is situated near chouragaon village, Kawrdha in Kabirdham district of Chhattisgarh.

This temple is comprises a group of four temples. The main temple is the Bhoramdeo temple built in stone. The architectural features with erotic sculptures in distinct style akin to the Khajuraho temple, Bhopal and the Konarak Sun Temple in Odisha, and hence the Bhoramdeo temple is known as the sobriquet the "Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh.
About Bhoramdeo Temple

The Bhoramdeo temple is situated 18 km away from Kawardha, amidst the Maikal mountain ranges. The temple was built between the 7th and 11th centuries by the Nagwanshi ruler, King Ramchandra Deo.

Amidst the picturesque surroundings of Maikal mountains and dense forests, the perfect blend of religious and erotic sculptures. Bhoramdeo temple, is carved on the rocky stones in the Nagar style.

The Shiva Linga in the temple is beautifully carved and attracts to the visitors. The “Madwa Mahal” near the Bhoramdeo temple is another beautiful historic monument, worth seeing. Just one km. away from Bhoramdeo , Madwa Mahal is known as the memorial of the marriage of Nagwanshi king and Haihawanshi Queen. ‘Madwa’ is a word from the local dialect synonymous to marriage pandal.

Madwa Mahal was originally a Shiv temple but its shape is like a marriage shamiyana. It is also called Dullhadeo Mahal. Nagwanshi emperor Ramchandra Deo has built it in 1349 A.D. The Shiva Linga is in the ‘Garbha Grih’ and the ‘Mandap rests upon 16 pillars’.

The erogenous idols of this temple are also extremely beautiful. On the outer walls there are more than 54 erotic sculptures in different poses. These asanas are from the “Kamasutra”, are truly an epitome of eternal love and beauty. They are artistically significant too. The Nagwanshi Kings were believed to be the practitioners of ‘Trantra’ as their contemporaries in Khajuraho. The traces of turmeric on the walls, indicate that marriage and other rituals must have been performed here from time to time.
How to Reach Bhoramdeo Temple

Air :- Raipur(134 kms) is the nearest airport connected with Delhi, Mumbai , Magpur, Bhuneshwar, Kolkata , Ranchi , Viskhapatnam and Chennai.

Rail :- Raipur is the nearest Railway station on the Bombay-Howarah main line.

Road :- Taxis are available from Kawardha(18 Kms). Regular Buses are available from Raipur(116 Kms.), Rajnandgaon(133 Kms.) and Jabalpur(220 Kms.) to Kawardha.
