Hamar Chhattisgarh: Shaktipeeth Mata Chandrahasini Temple, Chandrapur


Wherever the parts of body of Mata Sati fell on earth, that places are considered as Shaktipeeth of  Maa Durga. The temple of Chandrahasini Devi located on the confluence of the river Mahanadi river, Mand river and Laat river in Chandrapur, Dabhra tehsil of Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh. This temple is one of the 52 Sidha Shakti Peethas of Maa Durga, which is in a form of mother Chandrahasini. Due to the face the the moon, it's known as Chandrahasini and Chandrasheni Mata.

Chandrapur is located at distance of 120 km from Janjgir-Champa district headquarter and 32 km from Raigarh district and 22 km from Sarangarh. Here is the temle of Mata Chandraseni. And there is another temple of Mata Nathaldai on a few distances (about 1.5km) which falls under the borders of Raigarh district. Surrounded by natural beauty, Chandrapur is very captivating. On the one side, Mahanadi river touches the feet of Mata Chandrasekani with clean water, while on the other side Mand river is not less than the life-line for the area.

According to a legend, thousands of years ago, Mother Chandrasena Devi escaped the land of Sarguja and come to Chandrapur on the banks of the Mahanadi river, via Udaipur and Raigarh. Impressed by the holy cold stream of Mahanadi river, she is resting here. Mata was not wokeup even after years have passed. Once the ride of the King of Sambalpur passes through here, then, unknowingly, the king touched Chandrasena Devi's feet and mother woke up. Then in the dream, Goddess instructed the king to establish temple here and establish idol.

King Chandrahas of Sambalpur got mention of temple construction and goddess establishment. Due to look like the Moon (Chandrahas) goddess is also called "Chandrahasaini Devi". The royal family handed over the responsibilty of the temple arrangement to the landlord (Zeminder). The landlord here accepted Devi Chandrahasini as their Kuldevi and worshiped Mata. Since then, the worship of Mata Chandrahasini continues.

The idols of Ardhanariswar, Mahabalashali Pawan Putra Hanuman, Krishna Leela, Chiraharan, Mahishasur Slaughter, Charo Dham, Navagraha Sculptures, Sarvadharm Sabha, Shesh Shaiyya and other Deities are like alive in temple premises. Besides this in the temple premises is a living tableau depiction of the Mahabharata period, which gives details of Mahabharata's character and narrative detail.


On the other hand, the tunnel built inside the ground looks mysterious and feels adventurous while touring it. At the same time, Mata Chandraseini's moon-shaped statue meets all the wishes of the devotees. The face of Chandrahasini mother shines with silver, such a sight is rare in other temples across the country.

Mother Nathdai's temple is situated in the middle of Mahanadi river, just ahead of Chandrahasini temple. It is said that after visiting Mother Chandrahasini, the visit of Mother Nathaldai is also necessary. Otherwise the mother becomes angry. It is also said that the temple of Mother Nathaldai did not sink even after the water was filled with water during the rainy season.

Here devotees of devotees throughout the year. At the same time there is a fair atmosphere on both the Navratri pavots of the year. In addition to Chhattisgarh, devotees from other states wish to give their happiness and prosperity to the mother by lighting a flame in Navaratri here. Many devotees sacrificed goats and poultry here to fulfill their desire. Currently the temple is being managed by Mr. Gopalji Mahaprabhu and Mother Chandrahasini Mandir Trust.
How to Reach Shaktipeeth Mata Chandrahasini, Chandrapur
By Road: Chandrapur is located at 120 km from district headquarter Janjgir-Champa and 32 km from Raigarh. And located 221 km from Chhatisgarh's capital Raipur. Devotees can reach Chandrapur from Raigarh or Kharsia railway station and then bus and other vehicles easily available for Chandrahasini temple, Chandrapur. Apart from this, there is facility of bus and jeep for day long to go to Chandrapur from Janjgir, Champa, Shakti, Sarangarh and Dabhara. If the passengers wish, they can also reach Chandrapur by renting private vehicles from Champa or Raigarh.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Raigarh railway station which is 32 KM away from Chandrapur.

By Airport: The nearest airport is Swami Vivekananda Airport Raipur.
